I have been reading alot the last few days about the death of George "The Boss" Steinberenner. Some of it good, some of it bad. I do not personally know him, therefore, I cannot argue either way.
I do know, this man changed baseball as we know it and deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. It was once said, "If it's not about winning, why keep score?" George was about winning and he did EXACTLY that (his record speaks for itself!).
He purchased the Yankees for $8.5 Million, and turned it into a $1.6 Billion Empire. He wanted the best players money could buy, and got them. (Just look at the Alex Rodquiz deal). He expected his players to perform, but he paid them well. Heck, is that not any job that expects you to perfrom well, if not, why pay you?
He**, even the owners of other teams praised him. Why? because he rip the commissioner during collective bargining. Yea, he wanted to make money, but he was smart enought to know, EVERYONE in the league needed to make money for him to succeed. If he did not help small markets, he did not help himself!
What he basically did, politics aside, was grab NYC and put it on the sports map! From his charities to his players, he will truly be missed.
