I had a conversation with colleuge from old job. They had another round of layoff's and 2 people that I know very got let go. That got me to think really hard, "How do they REALLY determine these choices?"

At my job they let go of the Inicident Manager. 1. This was done the day before her wedding (seriously) and 2. I can think of a lot of other dead weight here (is it really business critical to have someone who's sole mission in life is to play with cell phones? We are not a cell phone company, Mining, Tool, Aircraft, and Medical?)

At my old job (per conversation above), they let go of JC. Not only did he have 19 years with the company, out of the 8 people in that group he was likely the brightest and could take over the work of the other 7 people without a glitch. Matter fact, he likely trained them!

My old job also let go of VJ. After 16 years with company, 6 months ago they promoted him from Operator in Miami to Support Specialist in South Jersey. Now after this man sells his home and relocated to unfamilar area 1000 miles away, you put him on the street? I have the dead wieght issue here also as I worked there for 11 years and I know for a FACT they do not need 40 people in that call center playing computer games all day!

@ 6 years ago, another long time Operator left Syracuse, NY for Hardware Support Position in South Jersey. Dude sold his home and was living in Hotel in NY until position because his. Saturday he moved to South Jersey, Monday, his first day of work, they walked him into HR and laid him off. He never got to see his desk? When Rick hit the roof, I fully understood. They could have called him FRIDAY before he left NY!

My friend that called me (and I love him like a brother) does documentation for Disaster Recovery. Since they moved all of his servers to Chicago and they have their own on-site DR Team and Documentation, is his position really needed?

I know what some might be thinking, "You play with your Fuze all day, is your position really needed? That is a yes/No question? No, they could likely get rid of me and save some money. Problem is, when that little light on the servers go from flashing "Green" to steady "Red" and the business is losing $250,000.00 an hour and you have 8000 employees that make good money standing in the break room because they cannot do their job, access to Dave sitting at his desk is VERY important.

Just some thoughts...............I hope this economy gets better soon!

$250,000 an hour?  They are losing that much?!?  Are they a rich company?  Oh my!...

To be honest, I don't think the economy will get any better.  If it changes at all, it will get worse :/

$250,000 an hour?  They are losing that much?!?  Are they a rich company?  Oh my!...

The answer to your question is a complex one. Have you ever seen Orange County Choppers? That huge Machine that they use to drill out custom rims are sold by Sandvik. We sell them no only to motorcycle  shops, but airlines, hospitals, ect. Those machines are $600,000.00 and run about $2000.00 a month to maintain with tools, maintenance, spare parts. ect.

If my server is down and the sales guy cannot sell one of them? What if Orange County Choppers wanted a new part? If they cannot order it, they will go down the street right? We are a Global Company, but personally (thru my servers here), I have all of Barzil, Chile, Argentina, Mexico, Canada, and all of the USA has to come thru here to conduct their business.

That number is a caculated guess on "How much business we COULD have done in 1 hour if that server was available?

We sell other stuff, but this is just an example.

And I just checked, we actually have 12500 employees that technically work thru here in one way or another. Not all of them use computers, but if you have 12500 people making $30.00 p/hour. Standing around for an hour is $375,000.00 for doing nothing!
